| GEOLOGIA DE LAS ISLAS CANARIAS (GEOIC)
Responsable: MANGAS VIÑUELA, JOSÉ Resumen: Esta línea está relacionada con investigaciones en Geología de Islas Oceánicas de carácter volcánico, realizándose estudios mineralógicos, petrológicos y geoquímicos de rocas magmáticas y sedimentarias que afloran en las Islas Canarias. Así, por ejemplo, en los últimos años se han llevado a cabo estudios geológicos de las rocas plutónicas alcalinas del Complejo Basal de Fuerteventura y de materiales volcánicos asociados a la fase de rejuvenecimiento magmático de Gran Canaria (ciclo magmático Roque Nublo y Reciente). Por otro lado, se han caracterizado geológicamente diversos yacimientos arqueológicos en Gran Canaria. También, se han estudiado los componentes bióticos y terrígenos de las arenas que constituyen algunos de los campos dunares de Canarias (Lanzarote y Gran Canaria). Por último, se han analizado diversos depósitos carbonatados, como beachrock (Lanzarote, Gran Canaria y La Palma), caliches (Gran Canaria) y tobas calcáreas (Gran Canaria). Summary: GEOIC do Geological Research on Oceanic Islands of Volcanic Origin and is mainly focus on the Canary Islands. Using mineralogical, petrologic and geochemistry techniques they try to understand the origin and evolution of magmatic and sedimentary rocks, which outcrop on these islands. | GEOLOGÍA MARINA Y SEDIMENTOLOGÍA (GEOMAR)
Responsable: ALONSO BILBAO, IGNACIO Resumen: Esta línea de investigación se encarga de la realización de todo tipo de estudios de geología marina y dinámica litoral, así como de la caracterización textural, composicional y micropaleontológica de los sedimentos de la playaforma, playas y dunas de las islas. Para llevar a cabo el primero de estos objetivos se realizan estudios de dinámica litoral en playas y dinámica eólica en campos dunares mediante levantamientos topográficos con estación total y DGPS, dispersión de trazadores fluorescentes, medidas de la profundidad de remobilización de la arena, utilización de distintos tipos de trampas de sedimentos, utilización de sensores de vientos, etc. Los estudios sedimentológicos incluyen la recogida, caracterización y cartografía de sedimentos superficiales en la plataforma insular, realización de análisis texturales y composicionales de las muestras y el estudio e identificación de foraminíferos. Summary: This research area deals with two main objectives: Marine geology and sedimentological studies. The first one includes any kind of studies on coastal dynamics (both on beaches and dunes) by means of accurate topographic techniques (electronic total station and DGPS), sediment traps, using fluorescent tracers, wind sensors, aerial photographs analysis and GIS. The second one includes the collection of sediments from the upper shelf, beaches and dunes (we have different kind of grabs and box-corers) as well as sedimentological studies (grain size analysis, petrography analysis and carbonate content and Foraminifera content determinations). | GEOMORFOLOGÍA Y GEOLOGÍA APLICADA A LA INGENIERÍA (GEOING)
Responsable: YEPES TEMIÑO, JORGE Resumen: La línea de investigación sobre Geomorfología y Geología Aplicada a la Ingeniería (GEOING) tiene por objeto: a) el estudio e interpretación de grandes deslizamientos de terreno, antiguos y recientes, y sus depósitos. Se han llevado a cabo investigaciones en las islas de Gran Canaria, Tenerife y El Hierro, interpretándose los procesos que originaron estos movimientos, tanto erosivos como volcánicos, y en colaboración con otras universidades españolas y extranjeras; b) la cartografía y el análisis estratigráfico de depósitos marinos antiguos, efectuándose estudios en Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura y Tenerife donde se ha hecho la interpretación sedimentológica de los mismos; y c) la caracterización geotécnica de terrenos volcánicos. Summary: GEOING research field is focus on Geomorphology and Geology applied to Engineering. It includes three main topics: (a) Large landslides and its deposits, old and recent, and slope stability processes; (b) Sedimentology and Paleogeography of old marine deposits and Paleoclimate influence; and (c) Geotechnical characterization of volcanic terrains, mainly in the Canary Islands. | INTERACCIÓN SUELO - POLVO ATMOSFÉRICO (GEODUST)
Responsable: MENÉNDEZ GONZÁLEZ, INMACULADA Resumen: El objetivo principal y recurrente de esta línea de investigación (SOIL-DUST) es la Interacción Substrato-Suelo-Agua-Polvo Atmosférico. Las principales actuaciones son: 1. Suelos desarrollados en materiales volcánicos y sedimentos, las principales tipologías de substrato de la isla de Gran Canaria. 2. El impacto del polvo Sahariano en suelos de Gran Canaria; tasas de deposición, granulometría, mineralogía y geoquímica. 3. Estudio de los posibles depósitos de polvo atmosférico (calimas), denominados en la literatura científica como loess-like. 4. Geoquímica y mineralogia de paleosuelos, interacción con procesos eólicos y costeros. Summary: The primary and recurrent aim of this line of research (GEODUST) is Soil-Dust interaction. The main topics are: 1. The recognition of the soils developed in volcanic and sediments, substrates of Gran Canaria. 2. The impact of the Saharan dust in the soils of Gran Canaria; deposition rates, granulometry, mineralogy, and geochemistry. 3.
